About the project

METHODOLOGY

How we work

The methodology for America’s Best Employers for Women 2026 follows four steps: gathering feedback from women employees, analyzing survey data, verifying eligible companies, and applying the scoring model to compile the final list.

Together, these steps ensure that the ranking reflects women’s workplace experiences, employer reputation within each industry, and the representation of women in leadership.

Further details about how the ranking was created can be found in America's Best Employers for Women 2026 methodology.

01 Data collection

Survey responses were gathered from more than 146,000 women working in the United States through online access panels over a three-year period. Taking data from this period allows a robust distinction between companies that perform well consistently and those that had only a single strong year.

Participants evaluated their own employers and shared their perception of other employers in their industry, with a focus on workplace factors relevant to women’s professional experiences.

02 Data Analysis

The survey resulted in more than 4 million employer evaluations, which were reviewed and prepared for analysis. Quality checks covered factors such as interview length, response patterns, and inconsistencies to ensure that only valid feedback from eligible participants was included in the evaluation.

03 Eligibility review

Companies considered for the ranking were researched to confirm that they met the project’s eligibility requirements, including having at least 1,000 employees in the United States. Publicly available company information was reviewed to verify relevant details and ensure that each organization fit the scope of the list.

04 Scoring and ranking

The prepared data was analyzed using a scoring model tailored to the women-focused employer ranking. The ranking is calculated from three scoring components:

  • Direct score: women’s evaluations of their own employer (60%)
  • Indirect score: women’s perceptions of other employers in their industry (15%)
  • Female leadership score: the share of women among top executives and board members (25%)

More recently collected data was also given a higher weight in the score. The 700 companies with the highest scores were included in the final ranking.

Scoring

How we identify the best employers for women

Employers are evaluated using a scoring model designed to measure how well companies support women in the workplace. The final score combines three components: a Direct Score, an Indirect Score, and a Female Leadership Score. More recent survey data is given a higher weighting in the final calculation.

Direct Score

The direct score reflects whether employees would recommend their own employer. Respondents rate, on a scale from 0 to 10, how likely they are to recommend their company to friends or family, where 0 means “not at all likely” and 10 means “extremely likely.” The direct score accounts for 60% of the overall score.

Indirect Score

The indirect score captures the perceptions of employers beyond a respondent’s own workplace. Based on their industry, participants are shown a selection of relevant companies and can indicate whether they would recommend or advise against working for them. This provides an external view of each employer’s reputation within its sector. The indirect score accounts for 15% of the overall score.

Female Leadership Score

The female leadership score measures the share of women among a company’s top executives and board of directors, using publicly available company information. Where data was unavailable, a mean score was used, so companies were not disadvantaged. The female leadership score accounts for 25% of the overall score.
